Glitter Jars Tutorial

A while back I went on a crazy with glitter and jars. I have a lot of glass jars (I have this random thing about collecting glass), and when I came across an article that showed gorgeous glitter centerpieces for a wedding, I thought this would be perfect! These are super easy to make, the materials are very cheap (under $10), and it is quick!

You will need:

  1. mod podge (a must in ever diy'ers kit)
  2. glitter
  3. duct tape
  4. foam brushes
  5. newspaper (so you don't make a mess!)

There are two ways to do this.  You can either have your glitter on the outside of the glass, or completely coated on the inside.  For the outside, you can paint on the mod podge on the whole surface, or use duct tape to mark off a line, and paint up until that line, and then roll the glass in glitter.

I chose to glue braided trim around the edge because my glitter line was not completely solid.

You could also use your foam brush to paint the entire inside of the glass, pour glitter in, and then rotate it so that the glitter covers the entire inside.

So go forth and have fun with all the glitter!  And yes, those are colored mason jars that you see on that bottom image. I will have a tutorial for that coming up soon!

Dresser to TV Stand

I obviously love DIY projects.  More so because I can customize and paint things to my liking instead of having to deal with a store not having what I want, or them having what I want and it costing an arm and a leg. I am the queen of frugal, I love to save money!

I was online one night looking for home diy projects on Pinterest.  We moved into our home in June of 2012, so I am constantly working on making it more us.  I've always envisioned this quirky, eclectic decorated home.  Since I am such a big fan of storage and keeping  things out of sight, turning a dresser into a tv stand was ideal.

We had our tv, cable box, xbox, and a couple of dvd's on a tiny tv stand, and a bookcase.  Definitely did not go with anything...again, my home is still a work in progress.

As you can see from this picture during Christmas...my living room is kind of sad. At least for me it is!

So I took to Craigslist for my search of a basic white dresser, and surprisingly found one in about two days for $40 (we also got a futon, a book case, and a computer chair while we were there!).  It was already white, so that was perfect. All I need to do was sand it down, clean it, and paint it.

Now let me just pause right here and let me tell you about the painting process. I was going through if I wanted the dresser white with teal drawers and white handles, or vice versa. After an hour of craziness and input from my family, I decided on teal with what drawers and teal handles.

This is what I started with:

After sanding, wiping down, and clearing out the inside. I painted the dresser with a paint color "tantalizing teal" that I got from Sherwin Williams.  The drawers received two coats of white spray paint, and the handles were spray painted tantalizing teal.

And here is the final look!

Say Hello to my Little Garden

I have finally started gardening!!!  Well technically I have been gardening for a few weeks now. But yesterday I actually bucked down and started putting my seeds into the ground, and the items we brought from the Wilmington Flower Market into the pots.

So here is the scoop:

I have 4 garden raised garden beds.  I received the lumber for free :) And with the help of my sister and my friend Steve, we put them together.  Very simple yes, I was just having horrible pain flare ups and could barely hold a hammer.  We tilled the earth using a hand tiller. Let me tell you now, OH MY GOD THAT SUCKS! I had to have my nephew come in and help me.

So far I have:

  • lettuce
  • cucumber
  • zucchini
  • brussel sprouts
  • tomatoes
  • peppers
  • lavender
  • mint
  • parsley
  • strawberries (putting in the ground today)
  • grapes (putting in the ground today)

This is my first time, EVER gardening. So I am no expert by any means. Much of what I have learned has been through friends who are seasoned gardeners, and the net. But if anyone has any questions, I will be glad to help any way I can.

i've never been more happy to have dirt in all of my life!

From Goodwill to Oh My Goodness! {Chair Project}

I'm horrible at updating blogs. Even my business blog, Marisa Taylor Photography needs to be updated.  But I will tell you this, I am wonderful at updating Facebook.  Because, let's face it. It's Facebook!  So I hope that eventually I get this blog going into an awesome diy resource, and journal of projects that I am doing.  Talking about projects, I have to show you what I did last night!

Above are two chairs that I got from Goodwill. I got both of them for $5!!!  Dark brown, wood look plastic, with navy blue, I'm guessing corduroy for the cushions.  We desperately need chairs in our house, so this looked perfect. And as soon as I saw them, I knew that I needed to grab them.

So I grabbed them, along with two cans of Purple Krylon spray paint, and went to work!  First I disassembled the chair, spray painted the back and legs. Then I took some fabric that I already had here, which was given to me for free, cut the shape of the cushion out, and added a few inches to overlap, and used my nail gun to put in place.  Wa la! New (to me) chairs, for less than $10!!!

The Burlap Wreath and me!

I haven't posted in quite a while, because I am a horrible person when trying to upkeep all of the blogs I have, as well as trying to do things on a day to day basis.  I wanted to share my latest crafting project though!

Before I share, last night I kind of went off the deep end. I've been very anxious lately, due to some issues, and I tend to internalize.  But I have no time to break down because I have a family to take care of and a business to run! So I tend to refocus that energy. And I spent about 4 hours in the middle of the night looking up things on Pinterest, and found "Dollar Store Crafts".  My mind=blown!

I LOVE the dollar store. I LOVE crafting. Why did I not find out about this blog sooner??!?!  So many cute ideas!

Im almost ashamed at how much money I spent today in regards to buying things to craft. But in my defense, I also purchased a drill, which is something I have needed for quite a while.  And that was the most costly item!

So without further ado, my wonderful burlap wreath. Which only costs $7 to make!!!

So basically, I got one of those wooden wreaths from the dollar store. A roll of burlap which was $6 at walmart, and I already had this white, knit fabric at home.  You simply wrap the burlap around the wreath, tightly, and glue it into place.  Then make the little rosettes by cutting a strip of fabric (the longer the strip the bigger your flower will be), wrapping the strip around itself, while twisting it as you go along, and glue in place. Bam!

The First Post!

Hi everyone! Welcome to the official first post at The Plush Bohemian! I will warn you now, I may be a bit scatterbrained while typing this out. Ok, so with that said, lets get on with the introductions!

I am Marisa. I am a 26 year old wife, mother, and photographer. Born and raised in Queens, New York, I moved to Delaware when I was 18 and have been here since. Yeah, it's a small state, but I can't complain.

So why The Plush Bohemian? Well, many of my friends and most of my family joke about how much of a hippie I am, and how I live a very bohemian like lifestyle. I'm not going to argue with them, I just I with the flow. It's me, and I love me. I love who I am!

The point of this blog at the end of the day is to make people smile. I like people to love life and feel good about themselves. I want people to feel love in all it's many forms. And I want to share things with you. I'll be posting about things I like, products I love, body positivity, outfit of the day posts, parent hood and more.

A couple of things about me:

I shop mainly at thrift stores/goodwill. I love a great thrift store haul.
Doctor Who. Enough said.
My favorite movie is Purple Rain.
I love wearing dresses.
I have dreads now.
My daughters middle name is Adventure.
I sew.
I love dressing up in historical costumes, like Victorian and renaissance.
People and cultures fascinate me.

So welcome! As the blog evolves, I will have weekly topics for posts and submissions and more!
